Since 1996, Skill Builders Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation Centre has been an MTO-approved Driver Rehabilitation Program, helping individuals understand their driving abilities and make informed decisions about returning to the road safely.

Our comprehensive driving assessments are completed by registered Occupational Therapists with specialized training in driver rehabilitation. Many of our therapists are certified driver rehabilitation specialists, and some are also licensed driving instructors. Supported by a dedicated full-time driving instructor, our team is able to provide timely assessments, training and recommendations tailored to each individual’s needs.

A driving assessment may be beneficial if you have experienced an injury, illness, or medical condition that could affect your ability to drive safely. Assessments are also appropriate for individuals who have concerns about their driving abilities or who have been asked by the Ministry of Transportation to undergo a driving evaluation.

Some conditions that may result in the need for an evaluation are:

  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Stroke
  • Amputation
  • Driving Anxiety
  • Spinal Cord Injury
  • Visual Impairments

Our goal is to provide clear answers, practical recommendations and the support needed to help you maintain, regain, or better understand your driving independence with confidence.

Driver Assessments with Skill Builders

The entire assessment typically takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours to complete.

Our driving assessments are completed by Registered Occupational Therapists with specialized training in driver rehabilitation. As Driver Rehabilitation Specialists, our evaluators have the expertise to assess how medical conditions, injuries, or age-related changes may affect driving ability.

Unlike some programs that require clients to visit multiple providers, our assessments are completed in one location and on the same day. This streamlined approach allows us to provide a comprehensive evaluation, timely feedback and personalized recommendations to help you move forward with confidence.

Operating under Ministry of Transportation approval since 1996, our team has extensive experience helping individuals understand their driving abilities, return to driving safely and explore strategies or supports that promote continued independence. Services include medical fitness-to-drive evaluations, driver training, vision waiver assessments, vehicle modifications and adaptive equipment recommendations, as well as support for individuals experiencing driving anxiety or returning to driving after illness or injury.

What to Expect During Your Driving Evaluation

Your driving evaluation is designed to provide a complete picture of your driving abilities and identify any supports that may help you drive safely. The assessment consists of three parts:

In-Clinic Assessment

We begin with a series of screenings that examine vision, cognitive skills such as attention and reaction time, and physical abilities including strength, movement, coordination, and sensation.

On-Road Assessment

You will then complete a driving evaluation in one of our Skill Builders vehicles, allowing the therapist to observe your driving performance in real-world conditions.

Feedback and Recommendations

Following the assessment, your Occupational Therapist will review the results with you, discuss any concerns, answer your questions, and provide recommendations based on your individual needs and goals.
